1938 Everest Expedition - Noel E. Odell (1890-1987)

1938 Everest Expedition - Noel E. Odell (1890-1987) A collection of letters, manuscripts, notes and printed matter relating chiefly to scientific aspects of the 1938 Everest expedition, 1936-1939, 12 pages, various sizes, in Odell's autograph, altogether approximately 54 pages, various sizes. The collection includes the typescript, with autograph corrections, of an article by Odell on 'Some Scientific Researches in the Region of Mount Everest' and a typescript signed by Odell entitled 'Discussion on "The Mount Everest Expedition of 1938"', a severe critique of the manner in which the expedition was conducted, in particular with regard to scientific research, delivered at the Royal Geographical Society. The correspondence relates chiefly to Odell's obtaining suitable scientific equipment for the 1938 expedition, including a phototheodolite, an actinograph, aneroids and thermometers. It includes an acrimonious exchange with Arthur Hinks, secretary of the Royal Geographical Society, on the subject of Odell's criticisms of the expedition.
