A Tropical Helmet of the 5th Dragoon Guards
An officer's fine and very rare Colonial pattern helmet by STOHWASSER & Co, Conduit St., covered with white melton cloth (originally pipe-clayed), buckskin binding to edges, white muslin puggaree, gilt-brass spike 4¼in. high, of regimental pattern, with cruciform base of similar style to that of a metal Dragoon helmet, crimson silk lining above pale leather internal headband, in its conical tin bearing brass plaque inscribed R.D. Steward 5th Dragoon Guards (the helmet lacking its chin-chain and retaining-hook)

Rupert Donald Steward was born Feb. 1880. He served in the Militia for 379 days, being commissioned in the 5th DG as 2nd Lieutenant on 4th May 1901.
