Private Charles Henry Holmes was born in Bethnal Green, London and enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers from the Militia in October 1898, aged 19 years. Embarking with the Regiment for Burma in early 1901, he went on to serve in the Tibet Campaign of 1903-04 and was present at the capture of Gyantse. Holmes was discharged at Netley as unfit for further military service in April 1907.
