ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN, historiated initial 'H' cut from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT CHOIRBOOK ON VELLUM
[Southern Germany, ca. 1550]
162 x 165mm. The Virgin, in grey robe highlighted in gold, with swirling veil, within mandorla, borne up to Heaven by angels, surrounded by billowing clouds with seraphim, with the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove above, and God the Father at top, wearing triple tiara and purple mantle, holding orb and crown, with below, sea and mountainous coastline with ships and buildings, in tempera, ink and liquid gold, skeletal initial with blue staves, lit white, against a ground of burnished gold, with floral stems in green, white, blue and red, with animal-head terminal (some light wear).
A delicately drawn, almost Mannerist image, of great charm. .
