Lot Essay

Colour-Sergeant William Howard was born in Kennington, London and originally enlisted in the 54th Regiment at Westminster Police Court in January 1871, aged 19 years. Transferring to the 51st Regiment in September of the same year, he was advanced to Corporal in October 1872 and arrived in Bombay in the following month. Howard received further advancement to Sergeant in March 1876 and went on to witness active service in the Jowaki operations of 1877-78, in addition to those in Burma between 1885-87, the latter with the Yorkshire Light Infantry to whom he had transferred in July 1881. Returning to the U.K. at the end of 1887, and by now a Colour-Sergeant, Howard was awarded the L.S. and G.C. Medal in 1889 and transferred to the 1st Battalion, Roxburgh & Selkirk (The Border) Rifle Volunteers in March 1890. Latterly appointed to the King's Own Scottish Borderers, he was finally discharged in July 1898 after 27 years with the Colours.
