Lot Essay

Brigadier Henry John Hughes Lawrence was born at Carmarthen in 1830 and entered the Army as an Assistant Surgeon in the Grenadier Guards in 1854. Promoted to Surgeon in 1866 and to Surgeon Major in 1868, he retired with the rank of Brigadier in 1885, the year of his participation in the Suakin operations.
