Lot Essay

Major Henry Affleck Houlton Ward was born in Tunbridge Wells in 1845. He entered the Army by purchase as an Ensign in the 60th Rifles in 1864. His Lieutenancy was purchased for £250 in 1867. Promoted to Captain in 1875 and to Major in 1881, he served with the King's Royal Rifle Corps in the Egypt Campaign of 1882, being present in the reconnaissance force from Alexandria on 5.8.1882, the engagement at Tel-el-Mahuta, the action at Kassasin and at the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir.
