CARTA EXECUTORIA DE HIDALGUIA issued by Philip II in favour of Hernando Santiago Avila de Herrera, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM

325 x 210mm, I + 91 leaves including the final 8 ruled and blank, collation: 148, 236, 37 (of 8, viii as pastedown), modern pencil foliation in lower corner of first 83 leaves, 34 lines written in brown ink in a gothic bookhand between 35 horizontals and 2 pairs of verticals ruled in red, cadels in upper and lower margins, one notary mark, pen-sketch of a girl's head on f.23, 31 LARGE ILLUMINATED INITIALS mostly 8-10 lines of gold renaissance forms against divided grounds of red and blue with white decoration, 11 ILLUMINATED INITIALS of 4 or 5 lines with staves of gold against grounds of red or blue with white decoration, TWO FACING FULL-PAGE MINIATURES (hairsides of parchment yellowed otherwise in excellent condition). Contemporary Spanish dark brown panelled sheep, gilt-stamped and blind-tooled, outer roll of roundels and arabesques, middle roll of trophies, innermost roll of foliage, central panel, corners and interstices symmetrically gilt with small tools including rampant lion, parrots, vases, warrior-headed roundels, arabesques, bagpipe-playing bears and dogs, remains of later silk ties (worn, spine wormed and slightly cracked, upper inner hinge split). Modern solander box.

THE SUBJECTS OF THE FULL-PAGE ILLUMINATIONS ARE:
fol.1v the Virgin and Child in Glory above a landscape with Sts Peter and Paul flanking a cartouche with the name of the King "Don Filipe", all within a burnished gold architectural frame with grotteschi and foliate decoration
fol.2 a large achievement of arms beneath the motto "Por la gracia de Dios" and a scene of St James routing the Moors, all within an architectural frame of gold with highly coloured foliate decoration.
