Inspector John Smith joined the Metropolitan Police as a Constable in 'H' Division in 1897. Promoted Station Sergeant in 'L' Division in 1904, he was present during the visit to London of the King and Queen of the Belgians in 1921 and the King and Queen of Romania during 1924. Attaining the rank of Inspector before the Coronation of George V, he continued to serve in that capacity until he retired in 1926, in which year he was awarded the R.V.M. He died in 1940.
