Major Alexander Thomson Gordon was born in Glasgow in June 1908 and completed his education at Edinburgh and Oxford Universities - at the latter place he won the Nubar Pasha Armenian Scholarship while studying Oriental languages at Jesus College in 1934. Commissioned into the Intelligence Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant in January 1942, he gained advancement to (War Substantive) Captain in March 1945 and Temporary Major in the same month.
