Sold with the recipient's Service Dress Tunic, Mess Jacket and Peaked Cap, the former complete with Medal Ribands and Rank Insignia, and tailor's label inscribed, 'Gp. Capt. P. Broad, 7/8/53'.
Air Commodore Harold Peter Broad, C.B.E., D.F.C., who was born in October 1909 and commissioned in the Royal Air Force in December 1930, won his D.F.C. for a number of early operations in Hampdens of No. 44 Squadron between September and October 1940 - among other targets he was detailed to attack enemy shipping in Wilhelmshaven and off Tershelling Island, including the enemy Battleship von Tirpitz. Returning from another raid on 16.10.1940, he was seriously injured when his aircraft struck an old hangar on coming in to land. Broad's C.B.E., which was gazetted in the 'V.E.' Honour's List, reflected good work with the Air Planning Section of the R.A.F. Delegation, Washington, work that involved close liaison with S.H.A.E.F. He was advanced to Group Captain in January 1951 and was placed on the Retired List in September 1957; see Lot 18 for the recipient's Air Officer's Sword.
