Colonel Arthur Spencer Pratt, C.B., C.M.G., was born in April 1855 and was educated at Rugby and the R.M.A. Woolwich. Commissioned into the Gunners in 1874, he gained steady advancement over the next two decades and had attained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel by the outbreak of hostilities in South Africa. During the Boer War he participated in operations in the Orange Free State and Cape Colony and was present in the actions at Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, Driefontein, Biddulphsberg and Wittebergen, afterwards taking command of the troops in Harrismith. Pratt was Mentioned in Despatches and was awarded the C.B. Subsequently placed on the Retired List, he was appointed an Inspector of Remounts in August 1914 and served in that capacity in the U.K. Appointed a C.M.G. in June 1918, the Colonel died in June 1933.
