JOSEPHINE (1763-1814, Empress of France). Autograph letter signed ('Joséphine') to an unidentified correspondent ('Mon Cousin'), Plombières, 21 June n.y. [1809], informing him of the good news of her son's recent success, and asking him to tell the Vice-Reine of Italy by telegraph that the army of Italy has won a battle near Raab [on June 14] and that the Emperor has signified his approbation, one page, 4to, on paper with impressed decorative border, blank integral leaf.
Josephine writes that she is enclosing a note [not present] which is for her correspondent alone, giving the only details she has received, a further communication not having yet arrived. Napoleon's letter to her announcing that Prince Eugène was at Raab was written from Schönbrunn on June 16th. At Raab Eugène attacked an Austrian army of 30,000 under the Archduke John, to prevent its juncture with the army of the Archduke Charles which was facing Napoleon. The Austrians suffered 6,000 casualties.
