ZWEIG, Stefan (1881 - 1942). Typewritten letter signed to 'Lieber Professor' [Otto Deutsch], Salzburg, 19 December 1931, saying that he has been offered a poem in Schubert's hand, dated September 1820, with a note by Robert Schumann saying that it is Schubert, obtained from his brother in Vienna; quoting the first stanza, opening 'Lasst sie mir in ihrem wahn' and asking Deutsch to confirm that it is Schubert, which seems likely as it is such a miserable poem and has a direct provenance from Schumann, one page, 4to, the letter annotated in Otto Deutsch's hand, adding the second and third verses and noting that it is almost identical with the Huber text.
The poem is given in Otto Deutsch's documentary biography of Schubert, where it is described as having been written for Josef Huber, and a second copy given by Ferdinand Schubert to Schumann in 1838 and sold in Berlin in 1932.
