A RENAISSANCE-STYLE ENAMELLED AND GOLD-MOUNTED BROWN AGATE CUP AND COVER
Possibly designed by Reinhold Vasters, Aachen, circa 1870
On circular spreading agate base, the gold border enamelled with scrolls and vari-coloured lobes with busts of children within scroll cartouches and band of foliage on matted ground above, the centre and vase-shaped stem with applied winged busts, the gold border to the agate bowl champlevé enamelled with flowerheads and scrolling foliage and outer band of beading, the raised cover with border of multi-coloured flutes, the centre enamelled with reclining figures emblematic probably of Faith, Hope and Charity, the finial with three applied winged monsters and surmounted by figure of Prudence
