Lot Essay

Eight designs for details on this cup and cover by Reinhold Vasters are in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. These designs are for the base, the lower and upper knops with details of ornamental bands, the rim-mount and the cover, and also the finial.

This cup and cover is also similar in form, except for the broad flutes of the body, to a cup and cover formerly in the Benjamin Altman Collection, and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, for which the Vasters' design survives in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (see Y. Hackenbroch, 'Reinhold Vasters, Goldsmith', Metropolitan Museum Journal, Vol. 19-20, 1984-5, pp. 226-7, figs. 130-1).
