Lot Essay

The present composition is related to a painting entitled, The Reader (1936; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne; see W. Michel, Wyndham Lewis Paintings and Drawings, London, 1971, no. P60, p. 341, pl. 129) and comes from a series of drawings of the artist's wife wearing a full-sleeved blouse (see P. Edwards, Wyndham Lewis Painter and Writer, Yale, 2000, p. 459, illustrated). Froanna Lewis is depicted wearing the same blouse in Red Portrait, sold in these Rooms on 9 June 2000, lot 83 (private collection).

We are grateful to Paul Edwards for his help preparing this catalogue entry.
