Lot Essay

A pen and ink drawing, illustrated as 'The Band', in A. Bury, Rowlandson Drawings, London, 1949, pl. 56 and J. Hayes, Rowlandson Drawings and Watercolours, London, 1972, p. 27, no. 13, illustrated, is in the collection of The Huntingdon Library and Art Gallery, California. This line drawing is on paper watermarked 1826 and Hayes notes, op. cit., p. 26 that this was one of the last works before Rowlandson's death in April 1827. Although impossible to confirm, the present watercolour may have been one of the last full watercolours Rowlandson executed before he died.
