The present watercolour depicts the city of Chester, clearly showing the cathedral. The view is possibly from Sandy Lane or from the village of Huntington, a little further out of the town. Little is known about Pearson, other than that he was born in Ripon in 1777. He was painting at Hawestone Park in Shropshire in about 1804 and is thought to have received tuition from Francis Nicholson, O.W.S., who was teaching in Ripon when Nicholson was a young man.
