LUIS DE GRANADA (1504-1588). Predications ... pour les iours de l'Ascension de nostre Seigneur, de la Pentecoste, de la Trinité, & du Sainct Sacrement. Translated into French by N. Colin. Paris: Guillaume Chaudière, 1584.

8° (170 x 104mm). Printer's device on title, ornamental headlines and initials, pages ruled in red. (Light dampstain, small marginal wormholes in final quires touching some shoulder notes.) Contemporary olive flexible morocco gilt, triple fillet border at sides with central crucifixion stamp of the Confrérie des Pénitents Blancs [Olivier 2491, fers 5 and 6], flat spine with French royal arms of Henri III on a ground semé with fleurs-de-lis, 2 compartments with flame tools flanking a skull in one and motto "Spes mea Deus" in another, gilt edges, single fore-edge tie. Provenance: Henri III (?), probably the copy cited by Palau as bound in morocco with arms of Henri III; inscriptions washed from title and final leaf.

PROBABLY BOUND FOR HENRI III, presented by an order which he founded in 1583, the Confrérie des Pénitents Blancs. A number of bindings are known which combine their emblems with the French royal arms, as here, often on books also printed by Chaudière. VERY FINE. Palau 107852.
