PAULUS III (Pope, 1468-1549). Bulla sacri oecumenici Concilii Tridenti celebrandi. [Rome: Antonio Blado] 1542.
4° (227 x 170mm). Collation: A-B4. Large woodcut of papal arms, historiated initial. (Faint dampstain at upper margin.) Folded sheets, uncut and unbound, in modern case. Provenance: dated 22 May 1542 in an early hand.
VERY RARE publication of the papal bull convoking the Council of Trent for 1 November 1542, the decisions of which had extraordinary significance for the Roman Catholic church, not least its decisions regarding the position of the papacy which was of "epoch-making significance" (Ency.Brit.). Demands for the convocation of an ecumenical council had been made since the 15th century, but it was not until 1542 that Pope Paul III issued writs convoking it, first for Whitsuntide that year, then delayed to 1 November. The present bull briefly recites the history of previous attempts to convoke the council, and attests to its necessity, particularly concerning a crusade against the Turkish infidels. The council did meet briefly at that time, but was sparsely attended and did not come into active existence until 1545. Not in the British Library, Adams, or NUC.
