PLATO. Opera quae extant omnia, in Greek with Latin translation by Jean de Serres. Edited by Henri Estienne. [Geneva:] Henri Estienne II, 1578.
2° (366 x 236mm). Greek and Latin translation in parallel columns. Printer's device on title, elaborate woodcut head- and tailpieces, ornamental initials. (Lightly browned, light marginal dampstain, some spotting.) Contemporary blindstamped pigskin over bevelled wooden boards, 2 brass fore-edge clasps (rubbed, slightly darkened). Provenance: early annotations in Latin and Greek; P.O. Bersell (signature stamp).
FIRST EDITION OF THE COMPLETE WORKS OF PLATO, and one of Estienne's most important publications. Estienne commissioned a completely new translation by Jean de Serres, abandoning Ficino's, and "for two centuries it remained the indispensable instrument of Platonic studies; to this day its pagination is universally accepted as the standard system of reference to the text of Plato" (Schreiber). A good copy in a contemporary binding with all the blanks. Adams P-1439; Renouard Estiennes pp.145-46; Schreiber Estiennes 201.
