A massive dated Ming bronze Buddha torso
dated to the first month of 1497, Emperor Hongzhi
with serene expression, downcast eyes, pendulous earlobes, arched eyebrows, the conical usnisa surrounded by tightly curled hair in a double dome, semi-clad with loose robes draped across his shoulders, traces of red pigment on the body and face, traces of blue pignment to the hair -- 55in. (149cm.) high, (old wear and rubbing, minor restoration).

The seven line inscription to the back refers to the area of origin giving a brief account of the commissioning of the Buddha by two Buddhist devotees, in honour of the kindness and benevolence demonstrated by the monks of the Kaihua Temple. The last line dating the bronze to the Ming dynasty Emperor Hongzhi, the 1st month of 1497.
