4° (189 x 149mm). Errata leaf at end. Woodcut device on title, woodcut illustrations and diagrams; occasional underlining. (Margins browned, first and final leaves strengthened at fore-edge, title and second leaf strengthened at inner margin, stamp removed from title.) Modern brown morocco, marbled edges.

FIRST EDITION OF THE FOUNDATION OF MODERN MECHANICS. It may be "considered the first modern textbook in physics, in it Galileo pressed forward the experimental and mathematical methods of analysis of problems in mechanics and dynamics" (Dibner). "Written in the form of a dialogue, the first four chapters deal with the resistance of solid bodies, the reasons for the resistance, local and accelerated movement, and violent movement and projectiles... The Discorsi may be seen as a mathematical complement to the philosophical discussions presented in the Dialogo" (Bib. Mechanica).
