LA FONTAINE, Jean de (1621-1695). Fables choisies. Edited by C.P. de Monthenault d'Egly. Paris: Charles-Antoine Jombert, for Desaint & Saillant and Durand, 1755-59.
4 volumes, 2° (420 x 270 mm.). Engraved portrait of Oudry by J. Tardieu after N. de Largillière, engraved and etched frontispiece and 275 plates after Jean-Baptiste Oudry, engraved by Cochin, Tardieu, Prévost, Chedel, Lempereur and others, wood-engraved vignettes on each title, wood-engraved head- and tailpieces after Bachelier (one clean tear affecting tailpiece, very light marginal staining). Near-contemporary gilt-tooled sprinkled calf, flat spine gilt tooled in compartments, 2 with labels (joints starting to split to vol.I, some cracks to spines and along hinges, some scuffing to covers), g.e. Provenance: Sir Thomas Hesketh, Bart (armorial bookplate, Easton Neston Library).
A FINE COPY IN VERY GOOD CONDITION, of one of the greatest of French illustrated books. Although the Fables had already been illustrated by several famous artists by 1750, the sketches by Oudry, finished by Cochin, complement the wit and humour of La Fontaine in the most perceptive and sensitive manner.
