Details
[MERIAN, Matthias]. Theatrum Europaeum. Frankfurt: [various publishers], 1662-1679-1643-1720.
13 volumes only (of 21: I-XI, XIV and XVIII), 2° (various dimensions). Half-title to vol.XI, letterpress titles (that in vol.I in red and black). Approximatley 971 engraved plates, of which 362 printed on text leaves, the remainder largely double-page or folding, of maps, plans, views, and portraits, (One plate in vol.IV in facsimile, some browning, heavy in vol.VI, some dampstaining, one plate in vol.IX loose and torn with loss, a few other tears without loss.) Various calf, vellum and pigskin bindings, vol.XVIII modern, the others contemporary (many somewhat soiled or scuffed, with splits to the joints.) Provenance: various, including: P. R. Beierlein; Else Gräfin von Rittberg; Curt Julius Einsiedel.
[And:]
A duplicate vol.XIV from the same work, with 42 (of 53?) plates.
A painstakingly assembled selection from this monumental work, which Graesse calls indispensable to any historian. The detailed chronicle of world events is enlivened by particularly fine engravings, largely by Merian. The dates and collations agree with the set described by Lipperheide (consisting of first, second and third editions of individual volumes), with the following exceptions: vol.III dated 1679; vol.IV dated 1643, with 978, 10pp.; vol.VI dated 1652; vol.X without leaf following title; vol.XI with 1484, 22pp. (not 1300, 16pp); vol.XIII without 1 leaf following title. The final 21st volume was published in 1738, completing a series which contains just under 1000 engravings. Graesse VII, 110. (14)
