SAINT-NON, Jean-Claude-Richard de (1727-1791). Voyage pittoresque ou Description des Royaumes de Naples et de Sicile. Paris: 1781-1786.
Volumes II and IV, parts 1 and 2 only (of 5), 2° (397 x 332mm). 168 plates (lacking 4 from vol.II, including phallus plate, and 1 from vol. IV, part 2) and 68 fine engraved head- and tailpieces, of which 22 are coloured, engraved after Saint Non, Choffard, Cochin, Duplessi-Bertaux, Fragonard, et al., by Saint Non, Choffard, Dupin, Fessard, Guttemberg, Quéverdo, and others. (Lacks 5 plates, some spotting, occasional light marginal dampstain.) Contemporary sheep, flat spine with two leather labels (scuffed, wear to spine ends).
"One of the monuments of French 18th century book-production" (Blackmer). Saint Non published the book at his own expense, and was ruined in the process. The sumptuousness of detail, which includes fine coloured head- and tailpieces, make it clear that no expense was spared in its production. Cohen-de Ricci, 928-930; Blackmer 1473. (3)
