MERCATOR. Atlas sive cosmographicae meditationes de Fabrica mundi et fabricati figura. Amsterdam: Johannes Janssonius van Waesberge, 1706.
Oblong 4° (235 x 364mm). Hand-coloured engraved title with allegorical and architectural surround and 180 hand-coloured engraved maps, lacking 4 numbered 6, 97, 99 and 156, ?19th-century index in Dutch written on front pastedown. (Browning to margins, repair to small tears at head and foot of titlepage repaired, tear in outer margin of final leaf.) Contemporary vellum, ruled and panelled in gilt with central arabesques (upper joints slightly cracked at head and foot, upper hinge cracked). Provenance: Bibliotheca Cothenius (bookplate), Lodz, Poland (inscription dated 1933).
This is a version of Mercator's Atlas Minor. The publisher was an heir of Janson Janssonius of Arnheim who, with Cornelius Claesz, sold the first edition printed by Hondius. In comparison with Koeman's listing of copies in Yale University Library and the British Library this copy is without Septentrionalium Terrarum Descriptio, Dauphine, La Partie Septentrionale du Languedoc, Polonia, Africa Nova Tabula and Russia cum Consiniis, but it has three additional maps not listed as in those copies: Poli Arctici, (2), Novissima Russiae Tabulae (4), and Poli Antarctici (184). Koeman II, Me 205.
