ORIGINAL LOBBY ART OF WILLIAM POWELL
ORIGINAL LOBBY ART PAINTINGS BY EDWARD AUGUSTUS ARMSTRONG (1905-1973) Back in the early 1930s, a talented young Florida artist named Edward Augustus Armstrong was hired by various movie theatres in the Florida and Georgia areas to create original paintings to use as lobby displays. He was given free rein with only one stipulation: the artwork had to be "as appealing as possible" to the patrons of the The Fox, The Roxy and The Capitol -- the old-time movie palaces which had commissioned Armstrong. The young man went to work making colorful, dynamic and innovative pieces related to now-classic films such as "The Mummy" from 1932 starring Boris Karloff, "King Kong" from 1933 starring Fay Wray, "Hell's House" from 1932 starring Bette Davis and "Me and My Gal" from 1932 starring Spencer Tracy among many other titles. After the paintings were finished, Armstrong would then hang them in the theatre lobbies himself. It was a unique way to advertise upcoming features and Armstrong was steadily employed for over thirty years. Christie's is proud to offer the following film-related paintings by Mr. Armstrong which come from his son, Edward Armstrong, Jr., who has saved these special pieces that were made over sixty-seven years ago.
