A German silver-mounted glass claret-jug
Marked 800 and Friedeberg, late 19th Century (below legal alloy)
Ovoid, on reeded circular pedestal foot chased with bands of strapwork and beading on a textured ground, with compressed knop chased with vertical lobes and stylised flowers, the glass body etched with scrolling foliage and flowers above a vertically cut border, the baroque silver straps to each side formed as oval cartouches held within guilloche, scroll and urn borders, a grotesque animal mask above, the cartouches each engraved with initials, the straps to the front and back chased with diaperwork and rosettes, the collar mount a beaded and scroll guilloche border, beneath reeded bands, the neck chased with baroque scrolls on a textured ground, the double-scroll handle cast with strapwork, vacant cartouches, foliage, lozenges, beading and husking with a grotesque mask terminal, the helmet-shaped spout with hinged cover, similarly chased with grotesques, rosettes, scrolls, strapwork and vacant cartouches, and applied with cast scroll finial with scroll brackets and stylised pomegranate
