A Dutch silver breadbasket
Maker's mark of Johannes d'Hoy II, Middelburg, circa 1782; also struck with duty mark for Leiden, 1795
Oval, on four foliate feet, with applied twig and foliage borders, the outcurved sides pierced and engraved in a lattice pattern centred with scroll cartouches, engraved at the ends with a shell and a flower, on one side with a crowned urn, the fourth cartouche vacant, the two ring handles cast as foliate twigs

Lot Essay

Johannes d'Hoy was apprenticed to Middelburg silversmith Christiaen Rijkert in 1750/51 and became a silversmith in the same town in 17661. d'Hoy was a very productive master. He made several objects for Reformed Churches, but secular objects by the master have also survived. Johannes d'Hoy made communion sets for the Reformed Churches of Vlissingen en Serooskerke.
