The chased bodies of the present sauceboats, with a shaped moulded rim, are supported by three cast feet in an abstract foliate-claw manner. The handles are made up of three C-scrolls. The engraved decorations on the upper part of the body are in Régence-style and seem to have been influenced by the London silversmith Paul de Lamerie (1688-1751). His influence can also be noticed in the decoration on a tea-caddy by the Amsterdam silversmith Hendrik Swierinck1. Both objects are rare examples of De Lamerie's influence on Dutch silver.
Francois van Stapele (1698 's-Hertogenbosch - The Hague 1775) settled in The Hague in 1720, where he became a master in 1723. In later years he was deacon, assaymaster and governor of the guild several times.
He was one of the most important silversmiths of the Hague. He contributed to the establishment of a typical Hague Rococo-style, in which the exuberance, typical for the Rococo silver by the influential French masters, such as Juste-Aurèle Meissonnier (1695-1750), was tempered.
Virtually identical pairs by Van Stapele, although without the engraving along the upper rim, are known2. The present pair formed part of the exhibition Haags zilver uit vijf eeuwen in 19673.
