The broad band brightly enamelled in the Japanese taste with a cockerel, hens and two exotic birds, a pheasant and a peacock; the inner band with pink and white flowers and green foliage on a yellow ground, mounted in gold, circa 1870, the enamel work most probably by Antoine Tard, unsigned, in brown leather case

Lot Essay

Much interesting information has recently been published on the Falize family of jewellers (see Katherine Purcell, Falize, A dynasty of jewelers 1999). This volume details the three main periods of the firm's history starting with Alexis Falize (1811-98), his son Lucien (1839-97) and his grandsons known as Falize Frères. Spurred on by his friendship with the talented enameller Antoine Tard, Alexis Falize drew on Japanese woodblocks (using in particular the Mangwa by Hokusai) and the brilliant colours of Chinese decoration for his distinctive cloisonné enamel jewels, the earliest of which were exhibited at the 1867 Exhibition Universelle. It is very unusual to find a hinged bangle enamelled in this way
