A GEORGE III MAHOGANY OPEN ARMCHAIR
Channelled overall, the rectangular back with central padded cushion covered in gros point needlework depicting a crest of a garb in a garter strap with a marquess's coronet, the seat embroidered with a 'B' below a conforming coronet and surrounded by crossed laurel branches, on square tapering legs headed by stop-fluted panels

Almost certainly supplied to Richard Grenville, Earl Temple, created Marquess of Buckingham (d. 1813) for Stowe, Buckinghamshire, and by descent to
The 3rd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos (d. 1889), and by descent to his daughter Lady Kinloss (d. 1944) and by descent.

Lot Essay

This chair is likely to have been commissioned around 1780 by Richard Grenville, Earl Temple and reupholstered when he was created Marquess of Buckingham (d. 1813). In the early 19th Century he rebuilt the East Gallery into the library and the chairs can be seen in a drawing of that room (illustrated above).
