The unusual carved acanthus ornament at the top of the legs and scrolled front and back feet relate to the famous set of chairs by Giles Grendey (d. 1780), the Clerkenwell cabinetmaker who supplied a suite of seat furniture for Gunton Park, Norfolk in 1740-45 (a side chair and armchair are illustrated in P. Macquoid, A History of English Furniture: The Age of Mahogany, London, 1906, vol. II, pp. 122-123, figs. 104 and 105 and in C. Gilbert, The Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture 1700-1840, Leeds, 1996, p. 243, figs. 437-438).
