Lot Essay

The stamp 'Gillows. Lancaster' is recorded on a larger version of this pattern of folio-stand at Temple Newsam House, Leeds (see C. Gilbert, Furniture at Temple Newsam House and Lotherton Hall, Leeds, 1998, vol. III, p.655-656, no. 820). The folio-stand is likely to have formed part of the furnishings introduced to Nostell Priory, Yorkshire, by Charles Winn, né Williamson (d.1874), who created a library/billiard-room around the time of his marriage to Priscilla Strickland in 1819.
