This pair of chairs is the same model as a suite from Wentworth Woodhouse, Yorkshire, now attributed to Wright and Elwick, and a suite from Hackwood, Hampshire, probably originating from Bolton Hall, Yorkshire. Wright and Elwick, partners in Wakefield from 1747 to 1771, supplied much of the furniture for Wentworth Woodhouse (see E. Lennox-Boyd, 'The Wentworth Cabinet-Maker: Wright and Elwick', the Wentworth Sale Catalogue, 8 July 1998, pp. 110-112).
Pieces from the Wentworth suite, supplied to Charles, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham (d. 1782) have been sold as follows:
8 side chairs, 3 armchairs and 2 settees, sold from Wentworth Woodhouse, Christie's London (Spencer House), 15 July 1948, lots 62 and 63.
1 settee (from above sale), Christie's London, 9 July 1998 ,lot 56.

Pieces from the Bolton suite, supplied to the 5th Duke of Bolton (d. 1765) have been sold as follows:

Another similar pair of chairs was sold by John Fleming, Esq., in these Rooms, 27 March 1938, lot 105. A further similar single chair was sold from the Estate of Lita Annenberg Hazen, Sotheby's New York, 17 May 1996, lot 94.
