A REGENCY BLACK AND GILT-JAPANNED TEA-CADDY
Inlaid overall in the chinoiserie style, with stylised landscapes and figures within a border of scrolling leaves, of rectangular form with a hinged stepped top, enclosing a fitted interior with two lidded boxes flanking a later cut-glass mixing-bowl, the sides with brass carrying-handles, on pressed metal-feet, minor restorations to the decoration

Lot Essay
The craft of japanning, or imitation lacquerwork was first attempted in 17th Century. This gilt Chinoiserie landscape scene on a black ground was a particularly apt design for storing exotic China teas.
