A MATCHED PAIR OF VICTORIAN BRASS-MOUNTED MAHOGANY HALL SEATS
Attributed to James Shoolbred & Co.
Each with a pierced galleried horizontal toprail flanked by downswept arms on circular supports, the solid rectangular seats on reeded tapering sabre legs joined by stretchers, each chair with two kite marks for 13 December 1883, one chair stamped '36988' (2)

Lot Essay

James Shoolbred and Co. of Tottenham Court Road, became one of the first large department stores in London. They expanded from a small draper business and started to manufacture high quality furniture circa 1870, for which they were given a Royal warrant by the mid-1880s.
An almost identical pair of hall stools stamped by James Shoolbred and Co, was sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 15 April 1999, lot 43 (£9,200).
