Lot Essay

The metamorphic easy chair has a folding day-bed frame to transform into the type of 'Couch' that Thomas Chippendale claimed as being called by the French a Pêché-Mortel in his The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 3rd ed., 1762, pl. XXXII. Its fretted ribbon splat partly relates to a Director parlour chair pattern, op. cit., pl. XII.
