The open triangular pediment with key-pattern cornice filled with later pierced trelliswork, above a pierced-fretwork frieze and three short and three long drawers, the lower section with a secretaire-drawer fitted with drawers and pigeon-holes around a central door enclosing further pigeon-holes and drawers, flanked by drawers simulated as leather spines of books, with two long drawers below, on ogee bracket feet, the reverse with depository labels for 'E. Easton Smith', the handles apparently original

Lot Essay

The angle frets correspond to a 'Gothick' pattern issued in Thomas Chippendale's The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1st ed., 1754, pl. CLVI; while Messrs. Ince & Mayhew issued a related pattern for a fretted and open pediment in their Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762, pl. XIX.
