Designed by George Thompson and Engraved by Don Wier for Steuben, 1948
The clear glass bowl finely engraved SWEET ARE THE LIFE USES OF ADVERSITY and decorated with a stylized female figure holding a lance and line-sheets amidst oak trees, with two applied knobule-shaped handles, engraved R and Steuben; together with original red leather and velvet presentation box and leather-bound archival photograph

Lot Essay

The present scene draws inspiration from Shakespeare's As You Like It. The heroine Rosalind, dressed as a man, is shown leaning on her lance in the Forest of Arden
