Lot Essay

Palmyra was the Roman name of the wealthy trading city of Tadmor, situated on an oasis in the Syrian desert. The city nominally recognised the power of Rome for over a hundred and fifty years, but under the leadership of Queen Zenobia, expanded and directly challenged Rome's power in the East. The emperor Aurelian reacted by completely destroying the city.
