Lot Essay

The krater-vase cistern, is wrapped in scalloped gadroons of reeds and hollow flutes in the George II Roman manner, such as feature on a mahogany cistern supplied in 1738 to to Blair castle by John Hodson (see R. Butler, Wine Antiques, Woodbridge, 1986, p.119). While the latter were raised on lion paw feet, this oval cistern incorporates a plinth in the early 19th century Grecian manner. A similar pair of grey and white marble urns formed part of the collection of Christopher Gibbs, Christie's house sale, 25 September, 2000, lot 134.
