Lot Essay

The Älvaden Valley porphyry seam was discovered in 1731, but extraction in viably commercial quantities did not occur until the 1780s, the works being acquired by Charles XIV, the first of the Bernadotte Kings of Sweden. His intention was to emulate the splendour of the French Empire style, and he advertised this by distributing works of art carved from the prorphyry throughout Europe, as diplomatic gifts.
The Älvaden works were sold by the Royal Family in 1856 and were destroyed by fire ten years later.
