Lot Essay

The present work was commissioned by Frederick Upham, a prominent businessman and citizen of Chicago, who became attached to a St. Bernard that belonged to a friend. When his friend refused to sell him the dog, Upham got Osthaus to paint this near life-size portrait of it to hang on his wall instead.
