A PAIR OF GREEK GOLD AND GARNET SPHINX EARRINGS
Hellenistic Period, Circa 3rd-2nd Century B.C.
Each seated on a plinth, one with her head turned to her left, one with her head turned to her right, both with their hind-legs bound by leaves with beaded wire veins and edges, the tail a plain wire coiled on the flank, the tips of the upraised wings joined to a circular bezel set with a cabochon garnet, the bezel with a beaded wire fringe, the earwire joined to a collar at the base of the plinth, the collar with beaded wire filigree bands and zig-zag, the earwire formed from a rounded strap and a pair of beaded wires wound spirally around a plain wire, the ensemble tapering to a single wire which hooks through a loop at the top of the garnet bezel
