A LATE ROMAN GOLD, EMERALD AND PEARL NECKLACE
Circa 4th Century A.D.
Composed of fifteen large disk-shaped links, each in the form of a straight-sided box with openwork scrolling arranged in a cruciform pattern, each side with a large granule on each volute, and a smaller granule in the center, together with sixteen smaller disk-shaped links, also box-shaped, with a pattern of openwork figure-eights, one side with a small dome in the center, the other side open, the links joined to lengths of plain wire threaded through either a spherical emerald (twenty-six) or a pearl (five, one missing), with two disk-shaped terminals, similar in construction to the larger links, with a small cabochon garnet in the center and a fringe of wavy ribbon formed into a hook and loop closure
