A BYZANTINE SILVER RELIQUARY CROSS
Circa 10th-11th Century A.D.
Formed of two halves, hinged at the bottom and once pinned together at the top, one side with Christ standing at the center, identified by the inscription IC XC, with the gospels under his left arm, the right hand raised in benediction, the four roundels in the arms, with a bust of the Archangel Michael above, unnamed, but identified by his wings and the scepter in his left hand, the other three each identified by an abbreviated inscription, St. Demetrios below, St. John the Baptist to the left and the Virgin Mary to the right; the other side with St. Nicholas standing at the center, raising his right hand in benediction, the four roundels in the arms with a bust of St. Athanasios above, St. Eugenios below, St. George to the left and St. Theodore to the right, each identified by an abbreviated inscription
