Lot Essay

Cf. The example sold in these Rooms, 7th May 1999, lot 514; see the example from the Lipski Collection, sold Sotheby's, 1st March 1983, lot 572; see also John C. Austin, British Delft at Williamsburg (1994), p.140, no.190.

The author suggests the portrait by Jeremiah Meyer as a likely source for this portrait. The existence of a companion plate depicting Queen Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz would suggest these were made at the time of their marriage in 1761. Also see Frank Britton, London Delftware (1987), p.154, no.144 for a companion plate.
